Goa police department has suspended a police constable, attached to the
anti-burglary squad of the crime branch, on charges of allegedly extorting
money from the city massage parlours.According to sources, an internal inquiry,
which was conducted, found some of the members of the anti-burglary squad
allegedly involved in extortion. The inquiry was conducted by a senior police
officer who on Tuesday submitted a report to the higher ups and in this
connection a police constable has been placed under suspension.
Sources claimed that the inquiry was conducted based on complaints against some of the members of the squad for demanding money from the massage parlours located in the city.
Incidentally, the squad was formed a year ago and had achieved breakthrough in around 20 burglary cases with recovery of goods worth lakhs of rupees.
While some of the members of the anti-burgalry squad have been accused of extortion, a senior police officer said that the squad will not be disbanded but the policemen who are allegedly involved in extortion will be either suspended or replaced. The squad will be restructured, claimed a senior police officer. [NT]
