PANAJI:
A well-planned plot, rather in a filmy style, by a trained commando from the US
to help an Israeli undertrial prisoner to escape from police custody was foiled
by an alert and well-coordinated operation by the Goa police on Thursday
afternoon.
Police have identified the accused as US national Charter Naftali and Israeli national Neria Bendavid. Naftali was nabbed near the Goa Medical College Hospital (GMC) around 12 pm while Bendavid was nabbed in Khandepar in Ponda taluka around 1.30 pm.
According to information, two police escorts (IRB) Sameer Gaonkar and Vikas Chimulkar had brought the accused Bendavid for medical examination at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) at Bambolim. The incident, according to police, was reported at around 11.30 am when Naftali, who was waiting at the IPHB, sprayed pepper spray on the policemen, kicked one of them and fled on a two-wheeler (hired) along with Bendavid.
The spray blinded one of the policemen while it narrowly missed the other cop. Taken by surprise, both policemen soon regained control, noted the two-wheeler number and managed to trace it at the GMC. Once at the GMC, the two policemen identified the accused. However, one accused (Israeli) managed to flee, but the other accused (US national) was overpowered by the two IRB policemen after a brief scuffle jointly supported by the local police as well as civilians.
Meanwhile, the IRB policemen alerted the police control room and the staff there subsequently got in touch with the Superintendent of Police (SP) North, Umesh Gaonkar.
Gaonkar coordinated with other police station heads and Sub Divisional Police Officers, who eventually helped to trace and nab the accused (Israeli) at Khandepar. ‘reel style’ flee bid
Gaonkar also passed on the details including photograph of the accused (Israeli) through Whatsapp, a popular mobile messaging app.
According to information, Ponda traffic police inspector Nilesh Dhaigodkar, who was on his way for lunch on his vehicle spotted the two-wheeler as described in the alert message from the SP as well as the police control room.
Soon Gaonkar was informed and he alerted the Margao police. The accused was proceeding towards Borim road. However, when he realised that he was being chased, he soon changed the route and headed towards Bethoda road. Subsequently, Dhaigodkar tried to intercept but the accused stopped the two-wheeler along the roadside and ran into a jungle area.
Police, who were already patrolling the area, spotted the accused coming out from the woods at Khandepar. The accused was arrested at around 1.30 pm after a brief scuffle, which left one of the police constables, Chaitan Gaude, injured. [NT]
