Panaji:
One hundred fifty two police personnel were suspended for their involvement in
various crime cases including rape, voyeurism, drugs, corruption, and assault
among others since 2010. One hundred twenty of them have been reinstated since,
as per statistics of the police department. Since 2010 till date, police
headquarters have suspended 111 police personnel, of which 86 have been
reinstate and 25 police personnel are still under suspension.
As per police statistics, 41 police personnel were suspended in both districts — 15 in North Goa and 26 in South Goa. In North Goa of 15 police personnel suspended, 13 have been reinstated and two are still under suspension. In South Goa, of 26 suspensions, 21 have been reinstated and five are under suspension.
Police personnel have been suspended from levels ranging from police inspector, police sub-inspector, assistant police inspector to havaldar, head constables and constable. Police personnel were suspended in high profile cases including the police-politician-drug nexus case, the Cipriano custodial death case, police personnel involved in sexual activities during office hours, alleged harassment and assault, etc. Speaking to TOI, inspector general of police (IGP) said that police are to protect the public and act against criminals.
"We have already told police personnel that if they are involved in criminal activities then strict action will be taken against them and action has also initiated," he added He also said that during every crime meeting, police officers have been told to sensitize their personnel not to involve themselves in any criminal activities. On whether there are any special warnings given to personnel being reinstated, Garg said there is no need to do so because as per the police manual he should realize that he has been punished for wrong doings and if he caught again, he will be suspended. There are some cases wherein police personnel have been suspended more than once.
Police inspector Sandesh Chodankar has been suspended in the Cipriano custodial death case who was then reinstated and for a second time he was suspended a few months ago for extorting money from a massage parlour.
